Initially, the hamlet of Varano served as a stronghold for Ancona during its period as a maritime republic (XI c.-1532).

Surrounded by fertile countryside with plenty of vineyards, centuries-old oaks and olive groves, the evocative hilltop village nestled in Conero Nature Reserve features stunning lookouts.

In September, Varano hosts the annual Dialetto Marchigiano Festival, which has brought together theater companies from all over the region since 1970. At the same time, visitors have the chance to sip local red wine at Rosso Conero DOC Exhibition. Undoubtedly, the food and wine culture is a success factor, with several well-known local cooks serving traditional Marche dishes.

Just a few minutes driving from Varano, the historic center of Ancona brims with many art and architecture masterpieces, unique lookouts, green areas, one of the major Italian ports, and great food and wine culture.

Because of its distinctive elbow-shaped coastline, the Adriatic Sea washes the capital of the Marche Region both to the East and the West. Thanks to this unique feature, you can watch the sunrise and sunset over the sea on Midsummer days.

Sunset and sunrise lovers can gaze at the phenomenon from Duomo di San Ciriaco: standing on one of the highest downtown hills, the massive Romanesque-Byzantine cathedral overlooking the sea is well seen from many spots in town. When going down towards the port, you will find Parco del Cardeto, the Church of Santa Maria della Piazza, Piazza del Plebiscito, Arco di Traiano, and Mole Vanvitelliana.
